Diploma vs Advanced Diploma vs Graduate Diploma: Which Level?

Illustrative example: names and details in the case story below are representative and do not describe a real person.
The quick answer
Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas and Graduate Diplomas are three steps on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). A Diploma sits at AQF level 5 and suits people moving into coordination or management work. An Advanced Diploma sits at level 6 and suits experienced managers. A vocational Graduate Diploma sits at level 8, the same level as a university Graduate Diploma, and is aimed at senior leaders. The right one for you depends less on ambition and more on the work you already do.
Diploma: AQF level 5, typically 1-2 years of learning
Advanced Diploma: AQF level 6, typically 1.5-2 years of learning
Graduate Diploma: AQF level 8, typically 1-2 years of learning

How the AQF levels work
Every nationally recognised qualification in Australia sits on the AQF, a ten-level framework that runs from Certificate I up to Doctoral Degrees. The level describes the complexity of the knowledge and skills involved and the amount of responsibility the qualification prepares you for. Vocational qualifications from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and university qualifications sit on the same framework, which is why a vocational Graduate Diploma and a university Graduate Diploma are both level 8.
The levels most working adults look at are:
• Certificate IV (level 4) - frontline leadership, supervision and specialist support roles.
• Diploma (level 5) - coordinating work, managing projects or small teams, and applying specialised knowledge.
• Advanced Diploma (level 6) - managing functions, departments or significant operations, with broad and complex responsibilities.
• Graduate Diploma (level 8) - senior and executive leadership, strategy and organisational transformation.
How long each one takes
The AQF expresses the volume of learning in equivalent full-time years. ASQA's guidance puts a Diploma at 1-2 years (1,200-2,400 hours), an Advanced Diploma at 1.5-2 years (1,800-2,400 hours) and a Graduate Diploma at 1-2 years (1,200-2,400 hours). Those hours include study, practice and assessment, not just class time.
Studied part-time online, S2C Training's indicative durations are 12 months for the Diploma of Project Management, and 24 months for the Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management, the Advanced Diploma of Business and the Graduate Diploma of Strategic Leadership. Your actual time depends on your study load, your progress and any prior learning. If you already do the work, RPL can be much quicker. See How long does an online diploma take?
Entry requirements are different at each level
This is often what decides it. At S2C, the Diploma of Project Management has no formal entry requirements. The Advanced Diplomas of Leadership and Management and of Business require either a completed Diploma or Advanced Diploma from the BSB Training Package, or two years' equivalent full-time relevant workplace experience in an operational or leadership role. The Graduate Diploma of Strategic Leadership has specific entry requirements relating to prior qualifications and/or significant leadership experience. For the detail on Advanced Diploma entry, see Can you do an Advanced Diploma without a Diploma?
Which one is right for you?
• Choose a Diploma if you coordinate projects, people or processes, or want to move into that kind of role. It is a strong first qualification for people moving from doing the work to organising it.
• Choose an Advanced Diploma if you already manage people, budgets or operations, or have at least two years in an operational or leadership role. It recognises management across a function, not just a team.
• Choose a Graduate Diploma if you lead at senior or executive level and set direction for a business unit or organisation.
If you are unsure, the honest answer is usually to match the qualification to the job you do now, not the job title you hope for. A qualification formalises capability; it does not by itself confer a role.
Where RPL fits
If you have been doing the work for years, Recognition of Prior Learning lets you have that experience assessed against the qualification instead of studying content you already know. At S2C, RPL is assessed online using your evidence, a live competency conversation and, if needed, a practical task. Start with What is RPL? and What evidence do I need for RPL?
Where to from here
The fastest way to know which level fits is to have your experience looked at. Complete a free skills check and an S2C course advisor will recommend a level and a pathway, online study or RPL.
Frequently asked questions
Is an Advanced Diploma higher than a Diploma?
Yes. A Diploma is AQF level 5 and an Advanced Diploma is AQF level 6. An Advanced Diploma reflects broader and more complex management responsibilities.
Is a vocational Graduate Diploma the same level as a university one?
Yes. Both sit at AQF level 8 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. They differ in how they are delivered and assessed, but the level is the same.
Do I need a Diploma before an Advanced Diploma?
Not always. For the Advanced Diplomas of Leadership and Management and of Business, two years' equivalent full-time relevant workplace experience in an operational or leadership role can meet the entry requirement instead of a prior Diploma.
How long does a Diploma take?
The AQF volume of learning for a Diploma is 1-2 years. S2C's indicative duration for the Diploma of Project Management is 12 months of online study, and RPL can be quicker for people with relevant experience.
Can I get a Diploma or Advanced Diploma through RPL?
Yes, if your experience matches the qualification's units. RPL is assessed against the same standards as study, using evidence of the work you have already done.
