Recognition of Prior Learning vs Credit Transfer: What’s the Difference?

Recognition of Prior Learning vs Credit Transfer: What’s the Difference?
If you’re looking to gain a qualification without repeating learning you’ve already done, you’ll likely come across two terms: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and credit transfer. They’re often mentioned together and both reduce the amount of study you need - but they’re not the same thing. Understanding the difference helps you take the most efficient path to your qualification.
What is credit transfer?
Credit transfer recognises formal study you’ve already completed. If you hold a unit of competency or a qualification issued by a Registered Training Organisation, that achievement can be credited towards a new qualification that includes the same unit - without you having to study it again. Because the unit has already been formally assessed and certified, credit transfer is usually a straight forward administrative process: the RTO verifies your existing record and applies the credit.
In short, credit transfer answers the question: have you already been formally assessed as competent in this exact unit somewhere else?
What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
RPL takes a broader view. Rather than recognising prior study, it recognises prior competency - the skills and knowledge you’ve built through work, military or emergency service, volunteering and life experience that has never been formally assessed. Through RPL, an assessor reviews evidence of what you can do and, where it meets the standard, recognises it towards a qualification.
RPL answers a different question: can you demonstrate competency you’ve gained through experience, even though you’ve never been formally assessed on it? For the full process, see our pillar guide “What Is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?”
The key differences at a glance
The simplest way to tell them apart is by what each one recognises and how it’s assessed:
• What’s recognised - credit transfer recognises completed formal study; RPL recognises competency gained through experience.
• Evidence required - credit transfer relies on existing transcripts and certificates; RPL relies on a wider range of evidence such as work samples, references and competency conversations.
• Assessment - credit transfer is largely administrative verification; RPL involves assessment of your evidence against the qualification.
• Best suited to -credit transfer suits those with prior accredited study; RPL suits those rich in hands-on experience but light on formal qualifications.
Can I use both together?
Yes - and many people do. The two approaches complement each other neatly. If you’ve completed some formal study and also built substantial hands-on experience, credit transfer can recognise the study while RPL recognises the experience. Used together, they can significantly shorten your path to a full qualification. A good RTO will look at your whole background and work out the most efficient combination for your situation, so you’re never studying anything you don’t need to.
Which one is right for me?
As a rule of thumb: if yourbackground is mostly formal training and certificates, credit transfer is likely your starting point. If it’s mostly experience - years of doing the work without a matching qualification - RPL is usually the better fit. Most people don’t need to decide in advance, though. The assessment process identifies what applies to you, including where the two can be combined.

How S2C Training can help
S2C Training (RTO 45605) offers an RPL pathway across every one of our nationally recognised qualifications, and can apply credit transfer where you hold relevant prior study. Whether your path is RPL, credit transfer or a combination, the goal is the same: a nationally recognised qualification, achieved as efficiently as your background allows.
